Portrait of a Daughter
This portrait features elements of theatricalization. Artists often depict their subjects in costumes from various eras, either at their own creative intent or at the request of their clients, organizing the background and space of the painting as a kind of theatrical set. This technique imbues the subject with an element of playful transformation.
In this work, the portraitist's daughter appears as a young artist in Renaissance costume. The portrait's figurative tone is based on the juxtaposition of the model's vibrant color with the gloomy black and brown background of the old city wall. We seem to see an Angel of Art, whose presence brightens a dull, monotonous world.
The model's features, like the entire composition, are artificially theatrical. The girl wears a golden wig with artfully curled locks. Her face itself seems slightly doll-like. Her large, wide-open eyes do not look at the viewer, but rather peer inward, into the hidden depths of her soul. The lips, pressed together with some effort, suggest the silent nature of this creature. One hand is raised, reminiscent of a drumstick, tapping a leisurely rhythm across the surface of the palette. The crossed legs, with their oversized shoes, suggest this image's connection to the earth. The large shoes resemble fetters. If removed, the girl could rise upward like a balloon. I actually take photographs for a canvas portrait, and then I transfer the photos to the canvas, naturally with my own take on the model. You can see them here http://www.portretist.com/1.html
